Domains & DNS / Practical guide
Understand DNS records
Connect a domain to a website or email without changing unrelated settings.
Steps
- Get the values required by your provider: A or AAAA for an IP address, CNAME for an alias, MX for email.
- Keep a copy of the DNS zone before changing it. Update only relevant records; preserve email entries when changing the website alone.
- Check the authoritative DNS response afterwards. Caches may retain old values until the TTL expires.
