Prepare a domain transfer

Gather the information needed before changing providers.

Steps

1. Check the registrant, contact address and expiry date. Transfer requirements vary by extension.
2. Ask the current provider about prerequisites, including unlocking and an authorisation code where applicable. Never post that code publicly.
3. Inventory DNS, website and email. A domain transfer does not copy website files or mailboxes; plan these separately.
